Of cancer in November 2002, aged 44. Alan was one of an impressive Southall lineage at the College: brother of Gerald (62-70), cousin of Andrew Golding (68-74) and son of the late Jack (32-40).
Alan joined the family business, Saffron Walden Laundry, soon after leaving school where he was so very popular with the staff, being well known for his willingness to roll up his sleeves and join in whenever there was work to be done. For nearly 20 years he served on the Walden Charity Trophy Committee, being both assistant secretary and secretary for half that time. A keen golfer, Alan became captain of the Saffron Walden Golf Club last year, where he was much admired and respected. The captain said: "Everone who brushed shoulders with Alan felt a real affection for him and his kindness and caring were always genuine... His loss cannot be calculated - he will be sorely missed". This admiration and respect was reflected by the presence of over 600 people at his funeral service held at St Mary's Church, Saffron Walden.
