OF Golf Society News – Cyril Gray & Grafton Morrish reports

David Turnbull reports that the OF Golf Society has been busy again with golf competititions.

In the Grafton Morrish Tournament a mix of youth and experience represented the OFs at this year’s Qualifying Tournament held at Gog Magog, Cambridge on 13th May. The bar for qualifying in recent years has been increasing, and this year it was raised again, with the top team totalling 93 points and the lowest qualifying with 80 points. Our team had two debutants playing, Harvey Finbow and Ben Swinburn, along with Harry Bush, Jack Westcott, Barry Hitchcock and Martin Lamb. Well done to our experienced duo of Captain Barry Hitchcock & Martin Lamb who were the highest scoring pair for Framlingham. Weather was good and the course in excellent condition. Unfortunately we failed to qualify but we will try again next year, but thank you to those who gave up their time to play.

In the Cyril Gray Tournament (21st – 23rd June 2018) we played against Stonyhurst, but unfortunately came out second best. Martin Lamb and Robin Anderton lost on the 18th, Hugh Curle and Mike Schneidau halved and Roger Wharton and Barry Hitchcock also lost. In the Plate we were drawn against St Bees and this turned out to be a very close and convivial match which we lost 2-1. Hugh Curle and Mike Schneidau lost, Martin Lamb and Barry Hitchcock eventually won on the 19th hole and the Robin Anderton and Roger Wharton match went to the 21st hole where, unfortunately, they also lost. If any OF’s would like to be considered for inclusion for the Cyril Gray tournament you must be a minimum of 50 years of age and play to a reasonable standard of around 12 handicap or less. Please email Mike Schneidau at mike@stocklandestates.com to confirm your interest. The competition is played at Worplesdon GC near Woking in late June each year. Next year’s dates have been confirmed as 27th – 29th June 2019.
