Ed Binder

Ed applied for a Moreau scholarship because, having really enjoyed his time at Framlingham, he’s determined to keep in touch with his fellow-students and all the friends that he’s made there over the years. As a Moreau scholar, he feels that he can make sure that he brings together as many as possible of those friends for social occasions.

His role as Head Boy has given him plenty of responsibility, but his calm and relaxed approach have helped him to get the most out of the experience. He says, “I’ve enjoyed representing my year and putting forward their ideas to try and help make the school a better place. Together with Caroline Reid, who’s been Head Girl, I had to organise the production of our leavers’ year-book, which has been a lot of fun. Talking to people about their time at Framlingham, and learning more about them has been really interesting”.

A keen sportsman, Ed has played many sports while at Fram, but rugby has been his main strength, where he played not only for the 1st team, but also at county level for Ipswich Rugby Club. He’s also been selected to trial for the Independent Schools Barbarians team. Alongside this, he’s played 1st team tennis and hockey and, beyond these team sports, he’s also represented the school in the National Clay-Pigeon Shooting competition.

Ed has enjoyed taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh scheme, in which he’s worked through his bronze and silver awards and has now completed his Gold award. Part of the scheme required him to do a certain amount of extra-curricular service, which he chose to do through the CCF, where he became Company Sergeant Major, leading the army section.

His post-Fram aspirations are to run the family business, which was established by his Grandfather. To that end, rather than a university career, he’s applying of an electrical engineering apprenticeship. He’s convinced this will be the best preparation for eventually succeeding his father and uncle in running “Binders” the well-known sewage firm. He’s been working for the company in his school holidays since he was ten years old, so already has a breadth of experience to draw on, and he says he really loves the work, and looks forward to a career leading the business to even greater success.
